I have a 'thing' for Angels and went through a phase of constantly drawing and painting them; I seem to have moved on to Crucifixion imagery now (it's that religious iconography interest I mentioned).

This is a small painting sketch of the view from Southsea to the Ryde on the Isle of Wight.

Hi Russell! Just thought I'd have a look at your site as well! What a fantastic eye you have...I l love the angels (well, I would, wouldn't I?!). I look forward to seeing some of your crucifixion imagery in due course!
You've obviously got real talent for art...I'm jealous beyond belief!
hi Tom, thanks for the comment.
Angels have long held a fascination for me as there seems to be such a diversity of imagery and mythology surroundng them.
The crucifixion (of Jesus) is obviously such a powerfully iconic image that it's hard to interpret it in any way other than pain, suffering and sacrifice. In a purely abstract vision, the criss-cross of lines, and shapes "piercing" one another is quite an attractive combination (i don't know if you've seen the Barbara Hepworth sculpture that used to stand outside Portsmouth Cathedral and is now at Winchester? that's one of my favourite crucifixion interpretations). Whilst i have seen a few benign or just sad looking crucifixion images, I have yet to see a joyful looking one which seems odd if the end result of Jesus' sacrifice was the salvation of mankind.
It appears that a crucifixion artwork is most often about a very specific act and isn't really used as a metaphor for anything beyond that time and act: even when artists or film makers do try to use the imagery of the cross as showing (a character's) apparent sacrifice, the gesture of the imagery is often crass. Whereas there are endless interpretations of other events in Jesus' life and how they can point us in various directions of meaning and connect with lots of different passages in the Bible, the Crucifixion is very static in time, place, concept.
sorry, rambling a bit and not makind much sense i'm sure.
Hi!
A very interesting site and you should certainly do more painting, i like the Southsea sketck one as the sky is very atmospheric
hi Chris, thanks for the compliment. I'm definitely aware that i could/should be doing more art. It's a hobby that i would love to turn into something a bit more...?
